Gladys Mgudlandlu’s nickname was Nomfanekiso, the person who paints at night, but she was also known as ‘bird lady’ because of the frequency with which she used the subject of the bird in her work. She was born in the Eastern Cape but spent most of her life in the townships around Cape Town. Self-taught, she gained fame only after her death with a retrospective exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and a monograph written by Elza Miles.
