Her Currency: Stories of heritage, identity, memory and power
This exhibition explores the many ways in which women create, carry and redefine value.
Bringing together works by leading South African artists Esther Mahlangu, Helen Sebidi and Mary Sibande, alongside other women represented in the SARB art collection, Her Currency reflects how women have shaped cultural and social narratives, often in the face of exclusion, invisibility and exploitation.
From Mahlangu’s transformation of Ndebele artistic traditions into a globally recognised visual language and Sebidi’s reflections on memory and spirituality, to Sibande’s powerful interrogation of representation through the figure of the domestic worker, the exhibition reveals how these artists redefine heritage, identity, memory and power.
Within the space, we also reflect the journey of women within the SARB, from being unrecognised to becoming leaders with influence.
These stories are about lived realities, resilience and perseverance of women and their enduring role in shaping history, institutions and society.
